Unique to the southern tip of Africa, Rooibos tea is grown only in the ideal climatic conditions of the
Cedarberg near Cape Town's Table Mountain. This completely natural herbal
infusion was discovered in the 18th century when the Dutch landed at the Cape of
Good Hope and named it "rooibosch tee" (Red Bush Tea). For
thousands of years, this unique beverage, with its rejuvenating natural
properties, has been enjoyed by local inhabitants who descended from the lost
civilizations of Africa.
Rooibos tea is rich in nutrients and contains many essential vitamins, minerals
and enzymes such as: Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Manganese, Copper, Calcium,
Zinc, Fluoride, and Chlorophyll.
According to scientific studies conducted by Brigham Young University, there is
one nutrient in particular that makes Rooibos so special. It is the enzyme -
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). SOD is a prime fighter against harmful free radical
damage. Free radicals are by-products of our own metabolism, and they also
come to us by way of environmental pollutants, smoking, radiation, florescent lights, car
exhaust, etc. Superoxide Dismutase has many other benefits including the
capability of helping to prevent fats from changing into harmful lipid peroxide.
Rooibos tea has also been found to contain Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), which offers
long-term skin benefits. It also contains substantial amounts of the anti-oxidants
-- quercetin, beta carotene and vitamin C.
Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that has beneficial effects on numerous ailments. It
acts as an anti-oxidant and is well known for increasing capillary strength, which
improves circulation and helps protect against infections and hemorrhages
The anti-oxidant properties of both beta carotene and
vitamin C are well known, and this is a pleasant and inexpensive way to take in
significant quantities in an all-natural form. Anti-oxidants also help protect your body from the
molecular damage to cells, which appear to be causative factors in aging, cancer,
heart disease and a host of other "maladies" of mankind.
Rooibos tea is a delicious, smooth, 100% natural herbal tea that contains no
additives, preservatives or color. It contains no caffeine or other harmful
alkaloids. It contains less than half the tannin found in regular teas, which makes
it taste less bitter than regular tea. It is neither a diuretic nor a laxative, but
it does help facilitate the removal of metabolic wastes that are produced in our
bodies.
The people of South Africa drink Rooibos to promote health
and longevity. Rooibos has been shown to lower cholesterol and blood pressure; provide relief
from insomnia; soothe babies with colic; have a calming effect on the central
nervous system, which has simply made people feel better (usually a great
indication of good health). Rooibos has been used to relieve headaches, nervous
tension, allergies, hay fever, asthma, stomach and digestive problems, and it
promotes an overall feeling of well-being. It has also been used directly on the
skin and in the bath to soothe mild skin irritations. You can also empty used tea bags into
potted plants as a super growth mulch.
